It shall greatly help thee to understand scripture, if thou mark not only what is spoken or written, but of whom, and unto whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstance, considering what goeth before, and what followeth after.

The Naked Truth

I am often reminded that many years ago, when I just started teaching the Scriptures, I had a dear elderly lady tell me that all she wanted was “just the naked truth.”

She didn’t want the truth “dressed up” in any way; she didn’t want to be entertained, she just wanted the truth: straight, simple and plain. That should be the grand goal of every Bible teacher: the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth – clear and simple.

But I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. … My speech … was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom … (I Corinthians 2:1, 4).
